Javier Abdala

Javier Abdala was born in Montevideo, 1971

He worked as a professor for 11 years at the Uruguay School of Fine Arts, Head of the Workshop in wood carving.

He usually works with waste materials, (such as pieces of furniture, pieces of cars and pieces of piano), any material he finds or he receives from his pupils, auctions, etc. All these materials are the inspiration of a new sculpture. His atelier is a very special workshop, a big space in which he receives everything that anyone is going to throw away.

The base of each sculpture is done with cedar wood and then he continues adding the recycled material. These materials will turn into amazing faces, of famous and recognized people, as singers, writers, actors, writers, musicians etc. For example: Van Gogh - Beethoven- Mozart- Salvador Dali - Marilyn Monroe - Francis Bacon - Ergon Schiele.

Each sculpture takes him a long process of study. With each character he has to achieve the expression of the look in his eyes, and the ability to convey the personality of each. The most important of the artist is the way in which he creates and recreates the character he is doing. Starting from a known character he achieves the creation of a work of art departing from the fundamental characteristics of the character.

Personal interesting fact: Javier Abdala is the ONLY person in his family that did not become a MEDICAL DOCTOR. His decision of becoming an artist and creating sculptures is believed to be due to his Dyslexia. This ended up being a gift not only to himself but to his worldwide collectors.
